Paris Saint-Germain defeats Flamengo and makes history in Qatar

Paris Saint-Germain triumphed over South American champions Flamengo in a penalty shootout to claim the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2025™ presented by Aramco. Goals from Khvica Kvaratskhelia and Jorginho secured the victory. Flamengo returned to Rio de Janeiro with two titles, but fell at the final hurdle.

Paris Saint-Germain made history on Wednesday night, becoming the first French club to win a FIFA competition, after defeating Flamengo in a penalty shootout to claim the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2025™ presented by Aramco.

In their first-ever FIFA-organized encounter, the Red and Blues proved too strong for their Brazilian counterparts, ensuring a memorable end to 2025 and adding another title to their UEFA Champions League crown.

In front of a packed stadium, and after a closely contested start, Paris Saint-Germain’s Khvica Kvaratskhelia broke the deadlock in the 38th minute, capitalizing on a low cross from Désiré Douet, which Flamengo goalkeeper Agustín Rossi had inadvertently headed towards him while attempting to clear it.

But the South American champions refused to be outmatched by PSG’s strength, entering the second half with renewed vigor and high spirits. Their efforts paid off in the 62nd minute when they were awarded a penalty after Marquinhos fouled the goalkeeper inside the box. With his trademark leap, Jorginho calmly converted the spot-kick, leveling the score and igniting the passion of the Flamengo fans who had traveled to the stadium.

The score remained level for the remainder of the match and extra time, despite both teams’ efforts to secure a victory. In front of their home crowd, Paris Saint-Germain ultimately prevailed 2-1 in a dramatic penalty shootout, where six of the nine penalties were either missed or saved. But Matvey Safonov was the hero of the match, saving Luiz de Araujo’s decisive penalty.

Despite the heartbreak, Flamengo leave Qatar with two FIFA titles to add to their trophy cabinet, having defeated Mexico’s Cruz Azul and Egypt’s Pyramids to win the FIFA Derby of the Americas and the FIFA Challenge Cup, respectively.

This match also ended a remarkable run of titles for Filipe Luis’s team, as the South American giants had lifted four trophies in five matches before their defeat in Al Rayyan. In addition to the two FIFA titles, Flamengo arrived in Doha having already secured the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian Serie A titles after two of their previous three matches.

Nevertheless, it was a night of celebration for Luis Enrique’s team, and the tactical mastermind celebrated his double in Doha, having been named FIFA’s Best Men’s Coach 2025 at a dazzling awards ceremony held the night before the tournament final.

This match marked the conclusion of the second of three major tournaments held in Qatar during November and December 2025. It capped off another historic year for FIFA and the hosts of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, who successfully organized the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025™ in November.

The schedule will conclude with the third-place match and the final of the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025™. These matches will be played at Khalifa International Stadium and Lusail Stadium, respectively, on December 18, coinciding with Qatar National Day.

Arab Cup | Morocco Advances to the Final with a 3-0 Victory Over the UAE

The Moroccan national team qualified for the Arab Cup final after a resounding 3-0 victory over the UAE national team in the semi-final.

The match appeared relatively easier for the Moroccan team, given the significant physical fatigue evident in the UAE team following their grueling quarter-final match against Algeria, which went to extra time and exhausted the players.

Many believe that Algeria played an indirect role in this outcome, having left their physical mark on the opponent, thus making Morocco’s task in the semi-final less complicated

The Moroccan national team secured their place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Arab Cup after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Syria in a thrilling match played today at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar. This win came after a tactically astute encounter filled with excitement and fierce competition between the two sides.

The match began at a fast pace, with Morocco dominating the first half with 57% possession and creating a number of dangerous opportunities. However, these were thwarted by the outstanding performance of Syrian goalkeeper Elias Hedaya, who made two crucial saves, including one from Zahzouh in the 12th minute. The first half brought a blow to the Atlas Lions when striker Tariq Tissoudali was forced off injured in the 21st minute following a heavy challenge. The 26th minute saw a controversial moment when VAR reviewed a potential penalty for Syria, but the referee ultimately decided to allow play to continue, and the first half ended goalless.

As the second half began, the Syrian team came out strong, threatening the Moroccan goal with a shot from Al-Mawas in the 49th minute, which the defense brilliantly cleared. In response, the Atlas Lions continued their attacking efforts, with Al-Tannane testing the goalkeeper with a shot in the 55th minute that lacked the necessary danger. The game then settled into a midfield battle for several minutes due to the high defensive positioning of both sides.

After the 70th minute, the Moroccan team regained their attacking momentum, but the Syrian goalkeeper continued his excellent performance, thwarting the Lions’ attacks. His most notable save was in the 70th minute, followed by a missed opportunity by Al-Barkaoui, who shot over the bar, and an excellent save from Saâdane’s header in the 75th minute.

The breakthrough finally came in the 78th minute after sustained attacking pressure. Walid Azaro, who had come on as a substitute, managed to unlock the Syrian defense, capitalizing on a rebound to score the winning goal and secure Morocco’s qualification.

The final minutes were marked by palpable tension, particularly in the 90th minute, when the referee consulted VAR before showing a red card to Moroccan player Mohamed Mufid, forcing the team to finish the match with ten men.

With this well-deserved victory, the Moroccan national team advances to the semi-finals of the competition, where they await the winner of the Algeria-UAE match, in a highly anticipated encounter promising plenty of excitement.

Algeria continued their title defense, securing a place in the quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory over already-qualified Iraq on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Bahrain achieved their first morale-boosting win, defeating Sudan 3-1 in the final round of Group D matches at the Arab Cup in Qatar.

Algeria topped the group, finishing with 7 points, one point ahead of Iraq. Bahrain (3 points) and Sudan (1 point) were eliminated, finishing third and fourth respectively.

Algeria will face the UAE in the quarterfinals, while Iraq will play Jordan.

In the first match, Algeria took the lead just before halftime with a header from Mohamed Tougai following a set piece (45+1). They doubled their advantage early in the second half with an own goal after a dangerous cross from Yacine Brahimi caused confusion between goalkeeper Fahad Talib and defender Saad Natiq, with the ball deflecting off the latter and into the net (46).

The Iraqi national team suffered two blows: first, Hussein Ali was sent off with a red card for a reckless challenge on Brahimi in the fifth minute, and then Mohanad Ali was forced off with an injury (32).

After two defeats against Iraq and Algeria, the Bahraini national team secured a morale-boosting victory over Sudan, with goals from Mahdi Abdul-Jabbar (37), Mohammed Al-Rumaihi (79, penalty), and Mahdi Humaidan (89), while Yasser Muzammil scored Sudan’s lone goal (72).

Morocco coach Tarik Sektioui kept his promise and didn’t play for a draw against Saudi Arabia, securing a 1-0 victory and qualifying for the quarterfinals of the 2025 Arab Cup in Qatar on Monday, despite Abdullah Al-Hamdan missing a penalty for the visitors near the end.

In the final round of Group B matches, Morocco needed at least a draw to qualify after Saudi Arabia had already secured their place with six points from two wins. However, Morocco’s victory propelled them to the top of the group with seven points.

At the Lusail Stadium, one of the World Cup venues, Saudi Arabia started strongly. In the sixth minute, a long ball from near the halfway line found Saleh Abu Shamat, who headed it brilliantly over goalkeeper Mehdi Benabid, but the ball struck the crossbar.

Against the run of play, Morocco took the lead in the 11th minute with a close-range shot from Karim El Berkaoui after excellent work from his teammate Tarik Tissoudali, the Khorfakkan striker.

In the 22nd minute, Tissoudali fulfilled his defensive duty, pressuring Waleed Al-Ahmad and preventing a dangerous Saudi attack, resulting in a goal kick for Morocco.

Ten minutes before the end of the first half, Mohamed Harimat received a yellow card for a foul on Abdulrahman Al-Aboud, which halted a promising Saudi attack

The Saudi goalkeeper made a crucial save from Tissoudali’s dangerous attempt in the 78th minute.

Oman exits the 2025 Arab Cup. Oman was eliminated from the competition despite a 2-1 victory over Comoros in the other final match of Group B. Oman finished with 4 points, while Comoros finished bottom of the group with no points.
