حصدت إسبانيا المتأهلة سلفاً إلى الدور ثمن النهائي العلامة الكاملة بتغلّبها على ألبانيا التي ودّعت منافسات البطولة القارية من دور المجموعات
تغّلب المنتخب الإسباني على نظيره الألباني بهدف نظيف اليوم الإثنين في المرحلة الثالثة والأخيرة من مباريات المجموعة الثانية ضمن منافسات بطولة أمم أوروبا 2024
وبذلك حقّقت إسبانيا العلامة الكاملة لترفع رصيدها إلى 9 نقاط في صدارة المجموعة الثانية.
وكان منتخب “لاروخا” قد حجز بطاقة العبور إلى ثمن نهائي “يورو 2024” منذ المرحلة الماضية ضامناً الصدارة.
في المقابل فشل المنتخب الألباني في تحقيق المفاجأة ليتجمّد رصيده عند نقطة يتيمة ويغادر البطولة القارية من دور المجموعات

From Moscow to Athens, via Los Angeles and Seoul, the Iraqi national team has a history full of Olympic participation in football. Despite the challenges and difficulties, Athens 2004 had the lion’s share of achievements with the team reaching fourth place, embodying Iraqi ambition on the global stage. As the Paris Olympics approach, hopes and ambitions are renewed to achieve an achievement befitting the history of Iraqi football. The Mesopotamian Lions aspire to return to Olympic glory, building on a rich legacy of perseverance and determination. The Iraqi national team is setting its sights on achieving honorable results, restoring sparkle to Iraqi football and writing a new chapter of achievements in the Olympics book. Paris, with its heritage and beauty, may be the stage in which Iraq returns to the pinnacle of football glory.
Moscow 1980: The promising beginning
Iraq’s journey began in Moscow, where the team performed strongly by defeating Costa Rica 3-0 thanks to the brilliance of Hussein Saeed and Falah Hassan. Despite the draw with Finland and the loss against Yugoslavia, this participation was the beginning of great hope in Iraqi football.
Los Angeles 1984: A Step Forward
In Los Angeles, the national team advanced to the quarter-finals after a remarkable performance in the group stage, beating Canada and Cameroon, but luck was not on their side against France in the quarter-finals. But the Iraqi fans did not forget the goals of Hussein Saeed and Ahmed Radhi, which lit up the skies of Los Angeles.
Seoul 1988: a difficult experience
Seoul’s journey was not easy, as the team faced great difficulties and was unable to achieve any victory. This participation was a hard lesson, but it added a lot of experience to the national team.
Athens 2004: The Iraqi dream comes true
Athens was the place where the Iraqi dream turned into reality. Thanks to the efforts of stars such as Imad Muhammad, Younis Mahmoud, and Saleh Sudair, the Iraqi national team reached the semi-finals, recording impressive victories over Portugal, Costa Rica, and Australia. Despite the loss to Italy in the third-place match, fourth place was a historic achievement for Iraqi football, which remains engraved in the memory of the fans.
Rio de Janeiro 2016: return to the Olympic arena
In Rio, the Iraqi team performed honorably by drawing with Denmark and Brazil, and drawing with South Africa. Despite not qualifying for the final rounds, this participation was a positive step towards regaining Olympic status.
Through these contributions, it appears that Athens 2004 was the most prominent stage in Iraq’s Olympic history in football. It is an inspiring story of perseverance and determination, highlighting Iraq’s ability to compete at the highest levels and achieve great achievements

July 2023 marked the start of a new era for Iraqi women’s football. With assistance from the FIFA Forward Programme, the Iraq Football Association (IFA) staged a futsal tournament with 140 players from ten teams in the city of Duhok. But this historic event was just the first step in the IFA’s overall strategy to increase women’s participation in football and give girls from different parts of the country the opportunity to play the game.
“We’ve started with futsal, but our goal is to build bridges that will eventually lead women to 11-a-side football,” said Dr. Rasha Talib, a member of the IFA’s executive committee. Now, less than a year later, that goal has been achieved, as evidenced by the highly symbolic inclusion of the national team in the March edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking
“Iraq’s entry in the ranking, in 172nd place, was a significant event and tangible proof of the progress made by women’s football in our country,” explains Sarah Sahebkran, a forward with the national team. “Iraq now has a place on the women’s football map. This ranking gives it more visibility and recognition at both local and international level.
“It will motivate people to support us and encourage even more girls and women to play football,” she continues. “It could also provide more opportunities to participate in international tournaments and to progress, as well as to move a little closer to gender equality in the field of sport, and football in particular.”
In any case, the IFA has spared no effort in developing the discipline. In particular, it has been behind the creation of multiple championships in all age categories. “Throughout this transition, we’ve put in place an electronic control system to manage the competitions at each stage,” explains Dr. Rasha Talib. “This system ensured compliance with the applicable regulations for participating clubs, the players, the federation and the referees.”
Because not many Iraqi women wanted – or were even able – to play football for logistical reasons or due to a lack of infrastructure, futsal has long served as an alternative for them. And while bridges between futsal and 11-a-side exist and will continue to do so, with a select few able to play internationally in both disciplines, the federation has been careful not to put all its eggs in one basket.
